Project Description
The JH Neethling building is located on the University Stellenbosch campus in Stellenbosch. The building is an existing facility consisting of 4 floors: a cellar, ground floor, first floor and attic floor.
The project scope included upgrading the entire ventilation system to ensure compliance with SANS 10400-O. Also included was a new HVAC to two upgraded lecture halls. The HVAC installation consists of new chilled water air-handling units with supply and return air installations. New ducting and diffusers were also installed. The system is a variable air volume system, complete with BMS, integrated with the university system.
The project scope also included making the building fire safety compliant. The fire installations included alterations to the firewater installation including new hydrants, new fire connection and drencher system. Included are fire detection, fire curtains, fire sealing, smoke ventilation and lift shaft pressurisation. All fire systems were integrated with the fire detection, relaying all fire alarms to campus security. Passive fire system design formed part of the project.
Unique Features and Challenges
- HVAC systems to lecture halls had to be low noise. This had to be done in an existing building utilising existing plant rooms with limited space
- Working on the entire building while lectures and normal activities were proceeding as normal.
- Building is a heritage building.
- Adding fire safety measures to an existing, old building
