Project Description

The Brakenfell Municipal Building is situated in the Cape Town suburb of Brakenfell. The facility consists of a main building and Annex building, both 2 levels.

The project scope included the upgrading the entire HVAC system to a constant air volume system for fresh air and a VRV system for the air-conditioning installation.

The HVAC installation consists of DX cassette and high wall units for all offices and a DX air-handling unit for the board room. Condensing units are positioned around the building in areas suitable for plant equipment and in a manner to minimise refrigeration piping.

The HVAC system was designed in various thermal zones, logically grouped together for best energy efficiency and control. Each thermal zone combined various indoor units with one externally mounted condensing unit.

Unique Features and Challenges

  • Variable refrigerant volume system ideally suitable for this type of building
  • Separate ventilation system to ensure entire building is well ventilated
  • Existing system is more than 30 years old and must be removed as part of the construction project
