Project Description
The NPL building is a new laboratory building on the engineering campus of the Stellenbosch University. The building consists of two floors. The project scope included various new laboratories and supporting infrastructure.
Stac Consulting Engineers was responsible for the planning, design and construction monitoring of the fire installations. This included the preparation of fire plans for council submission and doing inspections with the fire chief on completion.
The fire installation included the following services:
• Fire detection
• Voice evacuation
• Hydrants, hose reels, extinguishers
• Fire sealing
• Fire safety signage
• Evacuation chairs
As part of the passive fire engineering design, building escape routes, fire compartmentalisation, firewalls, fire doors, protection of structural components with intumescent paint, smoke ventilation were required.
Unique Features and Challenges
- Identifying critical structural members to protect with intumescent paint as part of the fire safety design
- Installing a VESDA air sampling system to ensure a more accurate smoke detection system in the larger areas
